Artist Ricardo Roig Pays Tribute to Westfield Symphony Orchestra

Artist Ricardo Roig is at it again. The Westfield High School graduate, now serving as McKinley Elementary School's art teacher, showcases yet another local treasure, the Westfield Symphony Orchestra, as the subject of his newest hand-cut screen print.

"This new edition was inspired by the orchestra paintings by Degas, who is one of my heroes," Roig explained. "I wanted to use local subjects as my models and create a composition paying homage to Degas, but using my unique hand cut screen printing process that speaks to my own modern artistic taste."

Roig said the WSO had reached out to him for a donation for their upcoming gala and he felt it was a great opportunity to create this image that he had been dreaming about for years.

"I will be donating print #1 for their silent art auction to help support this fantastic organization that has highlighted Westfield's commitment to the arts for 30 years," Roig said. "If it wasn't for Westfield's rich art culture, I would not be who I am today. I find it extremely important in life to show appreciation for where I've come from and do everything possible to make others in the new generations have the same great opportunities that I've had. Westfield has encouraged and supported me my whole life, and I hope to give back just the same as a thriving professional fine artist and as an art educator. 

Roig added that this might be his "best and cleanest edition to date."

"Working with Jaclyn, owner of Evalyn Dunn Gallery, she has constantly raised the caliber of my art and allowed me to perfect my craft as she will not accept anything into her gallery that is subpar. Her high standards continue to allow me to grow as an artist and a professional," he said.

"Westfield Symphony Orchestra" 20" x 14" 2013 Limited Edition of 15 Hand Cut Screen Prints exclusively available at Evalyn Dunn Gallery, $250 each unframed. Roig's other Westfield-inspired works shine a spotlight on beloved landmarks including Arcanum Hall, the Rialto Theater and Mindowaskin Park. Another recently-completed print 'Raritan Valley Line' pays tribute to Westfield's train station.
