Westfield Receives $20K Sustainable Jersey Grant

The town is one of eight municipalities to receive a grant this amount.

The Town of Westfield has received a Sustainable Jersey Small Grant in the amount of $20,000 to be used towards sustainability projects.

Westfield was one of eight towns in New Jersey to receive this particular grant, other towns received $10,000 or $5,000 grants.

“These funds will be utilized by the town to expand and improve our recycling capabilities at the town conservation center,” Chairman of the Westfield Green Team, William Heinbokel said.

The Sustainable New Jersey Grants are partly funded by Walmart and provide $380,000 in grants to local governments for sustainability projects.

“Recycling is one of the best and most doable ways to protect and preserve our precious natural resources. Expanding the recycling capacity at the Conservation Center will have an ongoing positive impact on the Town and the environment because a higher volume and greater variety of materials will be recycled over the course of time and, therefore, the volume of recyclable materials in the solid waste stream would forever be reduced. I thank Sustainable Jersey and Walmart for their foresight and consideration. As I have often said, the environment is a gift, one that should be nurtured in perpetuity.” said Westfield Mayor Andrew Skibitsky.

According to the Green Team, the grant money will be used to expand physical recycling operations at the Conservation Center, as well as provide additional recycling opportunities for residents. The additional recycling options will include, clothing, white goods, additional plastics, bulbs, batteries and more.
