Westfield: 'Just Farmed' Brings Farmer Market Experience Right To Your Door

Now in their second full season, Just Farmed of Westfield brings edible treasures traditionally found at local farmers market right to your front door.

Now in their second full season, Just Farmed of Westfield brings edible treasures traditionally found at local farmers market right to your front door.

"It's a culinary experience," owner Meredith Lehman said of the Just Farmed boxes that unfold all kinds of new fruits, vegetables, and recipes for customers each week.

An athlete growing up, Lehman enjoyed living a healthy lifestyle and wanted to bring her knowledge of maintaining a balanced diet others.

“I didn’t want to go the culinary restaurant route, but was really interested in some how bringing fresh food to people,” she said. “It was a great way to marry up my interests in the outdoors and interest in healthy foods while bringing it to people here locally.”

So, how does it work?

Customers from most parts of Union County and surrounding areas are able to sign up for Just Farmed insulated boxes to be delivered to their doors once a week, or bi-weekly.

The delivery service chooses about seven to eight types of produce from at least five or six different farms to feature per week. They have a network of over 70 farms from the tri-state area that they choose from.

As farms typically harvest their crops on Mondays and Tuesdays, Lehman and her team use the rest of that week to speak with farm owners and decide what will be feature in the following week's box - which can then be delivered on Thursday or Friday.

Lehman said each box is typically big enough to feed a small family with a healthy appetite for produce.

A typical season starts in the beginning of May and ends in the beginning of December - however, a monthly winter box option is also available.

Whats in the box?

While most of the items in the box are your typical produce staples, Lehman said they try to mix in one or two unique items per week that some people may not have heard of or tried before.

Locally sourced and certified organic are Just Farmed's two top priorities, however they also choose produce from farms that use organic and sustainable practices.
At the beginning of each season, every customer is provided a customized binder. With each Just Farmed box comes recipes and storage tips that correlate with that weeks bounty so families can store them in that binder.

Customers also receive weekly emails that describe whats in the box, where its from, and descriptions of the farms featured that week.  A list of farmers markets and festivals coming up are also provided.

Whats Next?

While route expansion may be in the works, Lehman said she also hopes to get a mobile produce truck up and running.
