The Weekender: Up, Up and Away in My Beautiful Balloon

This weekend, two monumental anniversaries will be celebrated. Events for the 30th Anniversary of The Quick Check NJ Festival of Ballooning and the 50th Anniversary of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad are planned.

The weekend is the last weekend in July and so many exciting events are planned. Break out your boogie shoes for the National Dance Day in Summit on Saturday or watch the colors of the balloons paint the sky on Sunday.

A special celebration is planned for Saturday as the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad celebrates it’s 50th Anniversary.

Friday

This is also known as the Teen Center for high school students and offers fun, games and music.  The event will be held in the basement of the Municipal Building’s Recreation Center.  Free – 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. – Westfield

Ed Wise & his New Orleans Jazz Band will perform as part of the Jazz on the Terrace Series presented by Reeves-Reed Arboretum.  This event is co-sponsored by the NJ Jazz Society. This is an outdoor concert and all are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. $20.00 per person – 7 p.m. – Summit

The Next Stage Ensemble will perform behind the Berkeley Height Library The Marriage of Figaro. In case of rain, the performance will be moved to the Community Center. This play is suitable for children ages 8 and up.  Free – 7 p.m. – Berkeley Heights

Saturday

It’s time to get up and boogie at’ 3rd Annual National Dance Day. National Dance Day encourages people of all ages to get up and move.  Dance classes and programs will be offered all day. Free – 9 a.m. – Summit

This block party of a celebration will provide the community an opportunity to celebrate fifty years of volunteer service. There will be an open house, safety fair, display of a variety of emergency response equipment, games and activities for the entire family. Local restaurants have generously donated food.  Free – 11 a.m. – Summit

Sunday

This event is presented in association with PNC Bank and is the largest hot air balloon and music festival in North America. This year the festival will celebrate 30 years and will be held at Solberg Airport in Readington. There will be live concerts, family entertainment and many more attractions.  This event is all weekend and will conclude on Sunday.  $20.00/adults $10.00/children – 11 a.m. - Readington
