Thank You to the Community from The Little Shoebox Project

The Little Shoebox Project lets needy children and adults in New Jersey know that they are thought of throughout the year by providing shoeboxes full of thoughtful gifts that they might not otherwise receive. 

The project was founded by Scotch Plains resident Katherine Dreyer and Fanwood resident Tracy Wright in mid-November. In just a few short weeks, the local community along with individuals from Boston to Florida generously prepared 260 shoeboxes. 

While a shoebox is small in size, donors were very thoughtful about what they included - we could feel the loving wishes packed in each one!  Shoeboxes were distributed to people affected by Sandy and in need through partnerships with Operation Brick Food Relief in Brick, NJ and St. Joseph's Social Service Center in Elizabeth, NJ. 

One shoebox recipient said, "Your shoeboxes have provided us with more joy than you will ever know, and rest assured we will enjoy everything you so lovingly chose for us."

The project will continue throughout the year with a variety of collections that will be distributed to shelters and families throughout the state.  The Little Shoebox Project is currently having a "Clean Out Your Stocking" drive now through January 20th for items that can be included in shoeboxes on MLK Day of Service, January 21st.  Suggested items include: small toys & games, school supplies, hygiene products, pamper products, hats & gloves, flashlights, paperback books, etc.  Please no candy or food. 

Of course, if you would like to donate a thoughtfully filled shoebox, that's great too! To create a shoebox, simply select your recipient, get your shoebox, fill it with gifts and drop off or mail your shoebox. This small box can make a world of difference to an individual going through an experience many of us even struggle to imagine.
