Optimist Club of Westfield Presents 2013 Youth Volunteer Award

WHS senior Alex Jeffrey, student government president, was chosen as this year's winner.

The Optimist Club of Westfield was pleased to recognize Alex Jeffery, a
senior at Westfield High School, as the winner of the 2013 Optimist Club
Youth Volunteer Award. The award is given annually to a high school junior
or senior who is a resident of Westfield and has volunteered a substantial
amount of time and effort to help others. This is the seventeenth year the
Optimist Club of Westfield has recognized outstanding young people who
distinguished themselves through volunteer service to the community.

Many of the nominees show a long history of volunteerism through their
schools, churches and the community at large and Alex Jeffery is no
exception. However, what set Alex apart from this impressive group of young
people was his dedication and leadership in school and extracurricular
activities. Alex is the Westfield High School Student Government President
and former Treasurer, a National Honor Society member, one of the student
organizers for the Westfield Concert for Hurricane Sandy Relief, an AGAPE
Soup Kitchen volunteer, a Holy Trinity peer minister, a volunteer for the
Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, and a volunteer French teaching
mentor for the Foreign Language Awareness Group.

Alex plans to attend George Washington University's Elliot School of International Affairs in the University Honors Program and major in International Security Studies and/or International Public Health.

Alex was presented with a plaque and a cash award at the Optimist Club dinner meeting held at Echo Lake Country Club in April.
