Cancer Expert To Speak At Westfield Memorial Library, June 10

Dr. Darlene Gibbon, a Westfield resident, will discuss “Personalized Medicine: What Targeted Therapy Will Mean for Cancer Care,” in a lecture on Tuesday, June 10, at Westfield Memorial Library, 550 East Broad St.

Gibbon, a researcher and chief of gynecologic oncology at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, will discuss what a new approach of precisely targeting genomic mutations will mean for cancer care.

The talk, starting at 7 p.m., is part of the 7th annual Anne and Lee Hale Speaker Series.

Gibbon, who received her medical degree from State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn, is also an associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.   She received her Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine, and has authored or co-authored more than 15 publications.   In her role at The Cancer Institute, she has oversight for clinical, surgical and research objectives in gynecologic oncology.

Prior to joining the Cancer Institute, Gibbon worked for four years as a gynecologic oncologist at Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester.

She has been cited by New Jersey Monthly magazine as one of the state’s top doctors and has received a number of other awards, including one for Hope for Leadership in Patient Care from the Cancer institute.

The popular lecture series is named in honor of Anne Hale, a library patron who passed away in 2007, and her husband, Lee, who was long active in community affairs until he died last year. The series is hosted by the Friends of the Library.
