Mystery of Mummies Unwrapped in Westfield School Classroom

Guest speaker, Dr. Michael Zimmerman – currently at Villanova University and previously affiliated with the University of Manchester in England -- visited Edison Intermediate School’s sixth grade Eastern Cultures classes to discuss his work in Egypt with mummies.  Dr. Zimmerman is a professor of paleo-pathology – the study of ancient diseases. Social Studies teacher Rob Maver explained, “Dr. Zimmerman has tried to isolate the diseases that ancient Egyptians died from by studying mummies.  He has also worked with mummies in other parts of the world, notably Alaska.” In addition to a fact-filled slide presentation, Dr. Zimmerman shared with the Westfield students his study of nutrition in ancient Egypt, the danger of parasites, and the role that the government had in providing food.  He also presented statistics on current diseases in Egypt.
