Experiencing trauma does not have to leave a child traumatized.
"Childhood trauma is far more pervasive than any of would like to think," said Mary Robinson, Executive Director of Imagine, A Center for Coping with Loss in Westfield, NJ. "Whether due to physical, sexucal or emotional abuse, neglect, abandonment or due to losing a parent of sibling to death, childhood trauma is an unfortunate part of far too many children's lives. However, there are things we as adults can do to ensure children don't end up traumatized by traumatic events."
So, what is trauma? And how can we help individuals, communities and schools to cope and even thrive in the aftermath of trauma and loss? What protective factors contribute to resilience after loss and what can we do to make a difference in the lives of grieving children and teens? To address these questions Imagine presents Donna Schuurman, Ed.D, FT, National Director of The Dougy Center for Grieving and a well-known speaker in the field of children’s grief.
