A NEW COAT OF PAINT FOR A NEW SCHOOL YEAR IN WESTFIELD

The following is a press release from the Westfield School District:

Westfield Public Schools open their doors for students on Tuesday, September 3, following a busy summer by the custodial and maintenance crews.   More than 25 classrooms in Westfield schools have been painted, including this one getting finishing touches by (l-r) Frank Benimeo and Donald Cherry at Edison Intermediate School (EIS).  In this second photo, head EIS custodian Russell Frame, surrounded by desks and chairs awaiting return to classrooms, heads to classrooms to bring a clean sheen to the floors. Work at EIS also has included the replacement of sidewalks, bleachers and boilers. Summer maintenance projects have taken place throughout the district according to the scheduled plans for each building, such as updating heating valves, removing and installing new flooring,  replacing sidewalks, and installing new lockers, countertops, drop ceilings and ceiling lights. In total, Westfield’s maintenance and custodial staffs have readied 902,000 square feet of rooms, hallways and stairwells in the district’s 10 schools. “Although the average age of our school buildings is more than 70 years old, our custodians and maintenance crews do a wonderful job keeping them safe, clean and welcoming for our students and staff, ” stated Dr. Margaret Dolan, Superintendent of Schools.   In addition to projects undertaken in-house, major work has taken place this summer by contractors who are replacing roofs on Westfield High School, Roosevelt Intermediate School, and Washington Elementary School.
