Figuring Out Jewish Culture from a Chinese Perspective
Dr. Lihong Song, Department of Religious Studies, Nanjing University, Visiting Professor at University of Pennsylvania
Thursday, March 7 ∙ 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.
Jews have been a part of Chinese history since the 7th and 8th centuries CE. More familiar to us, however, is the period between 1845 and 1945 when over forty thousand Jews came for business development or for a safe haven. Discussion will center on the establishment of communities, the creation of Jewish schools, hospitals and Jewish agencies to help in adjustment. Professor Lihong Song will also focus on the role of China during the Holocaust in his speech.
