Temple Emanu-El is honored to have Rabbi Mark Washofsky join us for a Shabbat of learning. All are welcome to a Lunch & Learn on Saturday, March 9, where Rabbi Washofsky will speak on “Playing God: Jewish Law and Genetic Engineering.”  The $5 dairy lunch from Deli King of Linden on Saturday requires pre-registration (sign up form can be found on our website www.tewnj.org). 

He will also be speaking on Friday, March 8, during evening Shabbat services at 7:45 p.m., on “Reform Responsa: How Jewish Tradition Responds to Today’s Issues.”  All are welcome free of charge.

Rabbi Mark Washofsky, PhD, is the Solomon B. Freehof Professor of Jewish Law at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC) in Cincinnati. He specializes in the literature of Jewish law and the application of legal theory to the understanding of the Jewish legal process. His publications deal with such subjects as the history of the halakhah, the nature of rabbinical decision making, and issues of medical ethics in Jewish law. He serves as chair of the Responsa Committee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, which issues advisory opinions on questions of Jewish practice.

Founded in 1950, this Reform Synagogue holds worship services on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. Additionally, the synagogue has a nursery school, a Mommy and Me program, a kindergarten enrichment program, a full kindergarten program, an early education program with more than 160 kids and a K-12 religious school with an enrollment of more than 650 students.
