NJ Residents For Action

NJ Residents for Action was formed by Westfield residents in response to the Newtown shootings .

A poll taken by Fairleigh Dickinson Survey shows that over 75% of NJ residents support greater gun control legislation. Our mission is to make sure NJ residents know the issues, and most importantly know where our NJ Congressmen stand on this issue. NJ Congressmen will be pivotal in getting the votes needed to pass meaningful legislation.

President Obama’s address to the nation, as he outlined his proposals to reduce gun violence and protect our children was emotional, riveting, and profound.

In Newtown, 20 first graders were intentionally mass murdered in the safety of their classrooms. A teacher hid her children in a closet , told the gunman the children were in the gym, and was then gunned down execution style while those children were forced to listen. If we cannot make common sense gun control in the light of these horrors , when can we?

This is not the kind of country we want for ourselves, our children, or our children’s children. We must take action.

NJ Residents For Action is a community-based group of residents working towards meaningful legislation, which includes a federal ban on assault weapons and magazine clips, universal background checks , and stronger punishments for illegal gun purchases.

Common sense tell us that military assault weapons and magazine clips of unlimited capacity have no place but in the military, so why would any civilians need them?

The Second Amendment’s right to bear arms for defense of one’s home and for hunting does not stipulate that any and all types of weapons are included , especially military grade weapons. If that argument is to be used, than what about rocket launchers, grenades, even nuclear weapons? Even Justice Scalia recognizes that the right to bear arms does not include unnecessary and excessive weapons.

We need to end this madness. Petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/pass-a-national-ban-on-assault-weapons-and-magazine-clips-in-congress?utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=url_share&utm_campaign=url_share_after_sign

Karen, find some other cause, you know nothing about this. Try the national debt, illegal guns, Iran's threat, or global warming. This "change" group sounds like something new from Obummers army of people without better things to do.

Do you know NJ has among the strictest and draconian gun laws in the country? Do you know the Obama and NJ proposals will not do anything to reduce gun violence? Do you know that most of the proposals affect only law abiding gun owners? Do you realize criminals do not follow the law? Why do Washington DC and Obama's Chicago have the highest murder rates when they have the toughest gun laws? Is there a correlation? Something about "gun free zones" makes criminals feel free to commit gun violence. Where was your Obama before the white kids died? I guess it is OK for the black kids to kill themselves in the inner cities. Do you know guns that are not "assault" can do far more damage than the scary looking ones you are referring to? Do you know most guns are semi-automatic? Do you know using the words "heavy artillery" is misleading anti-gun liberal speak propaganda? As I said before, try to find another cause like saving baby whales or something else, or at least know what you are preaching about before you run some group that does nothing but goes against the 2nd amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America.

I attended a New Jersey Residents for Action meeting tonight, I am very interested in finding a solution to this issue and was grateful that busy people put time aside to try to effectuate change. The meeting was well attended, but hyper-focused on assault weapon and magazine bans. If you care about this issue, please attend the meetings and Town Hall meetings with Senator Lance and help the group expand its approach
so it will succeed in eliminating school violence. If we remember that the NRA does not support shooting babies and understand that a first grader can be killed with one bullet - and not only assault weapons; and, if we think intelligently and know that anyone who kills another human being needlessly has a mental health problem (whether or not the New York Times agrees) our common goals and common sense will enable us to find more common ground. We need a movement that builds bridges across opposition and focuses on ending school violence immediately. Solving this problem will require the ingenuity of a lot of caring people coming together to share and refine ideas. This group is a good place to start.

Karen Saminski,
Certainly soneone who kills has a mental health problem. But first you need to eradicate the ability for them to have access to the tyoe of military weapons to carry out what is in your sad and ill minds . This isn't ROCKET SCIENCE
We are ENABLING these unfortunate people who have not only been left behind by society but we are actually handing them over the ammunition and I mean that literally to carry out what is in their fantasies. It is insanity.
There ARE other factors to this but first let's get rid of the weapons !!!it is not rocket science!!!
You don't leave the butcher knives around your three years because you don't know what they can do with them. It's just common sense for god sake!!
And don't tell me that people need military assault rifles to defend themselves. It's insanity ...people need to stop and open their EYES . What kind of a country do we want to become ?? Do we want to become like Uganda wihere everyone walks around with military weapons? Is that what people want? Is that what YOU WANT ? We need to focus on the guns first.
Republicans won't even pay for old people about to lose their Medicare ---do think they are going to pay for mental-health programs? When I was in Leonard Lance's office I asked him would he vote for a funding for mental health programs. He said yes . I will hold my breath for that one
Karen , I'm sorry but we need to START WITH COMMON SENSE First
