From the Leaps and Bounds program through the high school, students of all ages displayed their work.
Where can you find construction paper penguins crafted by preschoolers standing alongside dramatic and accomplished photographs of the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens taken by a Westfield High School student? At the Westfield school district art show, of course. The gym inside the high school has been transformed into a spectacular gallery showcasing the work of students throughout the school district. From mixed media to photography, pastels and ceramics, the show, which began Tuesday and continues through Thursday afternoon, offers something for everyone. "I'm always impressed with the talents of our Westfield High School students," said Principal Peter Renwick. "I continue to be grateful to be associated with a district that continues to …

Coffee with Conscience 2011-2012 season closes with its first-ever a cappella performance and an ice cream social.
Remember the Astelin Nasal Spray commercial with the a cappella singers? Well, that was the GrooveBarbers and they will be with us in Westfield, singing in perfect four-part harmony along with lots of silliness between the songs. Coffee With Conscience closes out its 2011-2012 series with Sean Altman and the GrooveBarbers at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at the First United Methodist Church. This is also our 12th Season's Finale and therefore the long-awaited ice cream social! Sean Altman is considered "the father of modern a cappella." For 11 years, he was a lead singer, arranger and composer for the pioneering group Rockapella, with whom he released nine CDs and starred in the five-year PBS-TV series 'Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?' …
Westfield's native son and creator of 'The Addams Family' drew the Rialto in many cartoons; now the theater returns the favor.
A new gallery of Charles Addams cartoons will be displayed in the Digiplex Rialto Theater of Westfield, a 90-year old institution that was depicted in many of Addams' best work for The New Yorker magazine and elsewhere at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 at the Rialto. The unveiling coincides with the 100th anniversary of Addams' birth and is a fundraiser for the Charles Addams Art Scholarship. The creator of the famed The Addams Family TV show and Broadway production, Addams lived in Westfield and attended Westfield High School. The gallery inside the Digiplex Rialto Theater lobby will depict copies of many of Addams' favorite cartoons. There will be a series of cartoons which will be replaced periodically. Each will be selected by Addams …

Event celebrates its 30th season.
When is a balloon festival not (just) a balloon festival? That’s a tough question, especially when a huge yearly event is billed as such (I mean, it's called the Festival of Ballooning, after all) and there certainly are plenty of hot-air balloons to be displayed. Still, the Quick Chek Festival of Ballooning—in its 30th year, running from July 27 through 29 at Solberg Airport in Readington—is also part amusement park, with a healthy number of rides, an arts-and-crafts emporium, a yoga and Zumba demonstration, and lots and lots of food. Of the 30 years, Quick Chek has been a major sponsor for 20. And for the first time, Patch is partnering with the festival to get you in at a great price. Between May 13 and 20, use this link to buy tickets …
The second annual variety show is a fundraiser for the Westfield High School Drama Department.
Nearly 100 Westfield High School students are combining their talents to make a little 'May-Hem.' The second annual Westfield Theatre Guild variety show and fundraiser will be held at 7 p.m. tonight in the WHS auditorium. Musicians, singers, dancers and actors will take to the stage to showcase their abilities in a fun-filled evening of entertainment to benefit the WHS Drama Department. Last year, 'MAY-HEM' raised over $3,000 and provided an opportunity for 50 interested students to participate. "Every kid must've told a friend," said Lisa Smelkinson, who co-founded the Westfield Theatre Guild with Westfield Board of Education member Ann Cary. The two are thrilled that the cast and crew has doubled since its inaugural performance. "We …

People come from all over to eat, shop and have fun during 18th annual day-long celebration.
A bright May day provided the perfect backdrop for Westfield's 18th Annual Spring Fling Sunday as locals and visitors from all over took part in the street fair and festival. Held between East Broad and North streets and Elm and Quimby streets, the event, sponsored by the Greater Westfield Area Chamber of Commerce and orchestrated by This Is It Productions, drew more than 45,000 visitors, according to local officials. Spring Fling attendees munched on a variety of festival foods, such as sausage-and-pepper sandwiches, zeppoles, ka-bobs, corn on the cob, funnel cakes and fresh-squeezed lemonade. In between meals, children talked their parents into letting them get their faces painted and take rides on bouncy slides, a mechanical bull and …
