Would You Put an Urban Outfitters Here?

The Westfield Board of Adjustment will hold a special meeting on Thursday, Feb. 16 to hear and consider a variance request that would allow the national retailer to move into 154 E. Broad St.

This week instead of asking "What Would You Put Here?" we're taking a look at what might be coming to fill the void at the corner of Elm and East Broad Streets.

Following a four-year vacancy, the building at 154 E. Broad St., formerly occupied by a bank, could find itself with a new tenant: Urban Outfitters.

The international chain, whose closest shop is located in Montclair, is known for selling men's and women's apparel in addition to a wide selection of kitsch (think vintage lunchboxes and boxing nun dolls.) The retailer is seeking approval to convert the use of the vacant building to a retail use.

The Board of Adjustment will hold a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16 in the Council Chambers at the Municipal Building to hear and consider an appeal for bulk and use variance relief from requirements of the Westfield Land Use Ordinance.

The first floor, the mezzanine and a portion of the basement would be used as retail space. Other sections of the basement would be used for receiving, storage, office use and an employee area.

Sherry Cronin, executive director of the Downtown Westfield Corporation, said while the building is "beautiful," it has been difficult to fill because it is so vast, with over 5,000 square feet of leasable space.

The plans and application are on file in the office of the Town Engineer, 959 North Avenue West and may be seen Monday through Friday from 8:30  a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This is fantastic news! Great for the town, neighboring shops, etc. That building has been vacant WAY too long.

I think this property would be great for a brew-pub. The high ceilings would be conducive to a spectacular brew sculpture (the stacks of copper fermentation tanks and boil kettles).

A brew pub ? No liqour licenses available. But then again it never stopped Ferarro's as long as they had a councilman or two in their pocket..

Almost anything is better than a vacant store.

A great NYC feel Steakhouse, like Roots in Summit, but better!! The liquor license will be an issue though. I would also prefer a JCREW over Urban Outfitters. JCREW fits Westfield style better.
