Westfielder Wins Daytime Emmy for Work on Dr. Oz Show

Christopher J. Molen takes pride in knowing the show has helped others.

Westfield resident and TV producer Christopher J. Molen received an Emmy award for his work on Dr. Oz on Saturday, June 23, in Los Angeles.

Molen’s love for TV and film carried him to Glassboro State College (now known as Rowan University) where he majored in Communications—specifically Radio, TV, and Film. Having held previous jobs at Sony, Molen was able to get involved with Dr. Oz, which is also a production of Sony Pictures Television and Harpo Studios.

“I was lucky enough to have had contacts from other jobs at Sony and was able to get in to meet the right people and get in on the ground floor,” he explained. “I have been with Dr. Oz since the launch of the show. I started in June of 2009 and we launched in September. We are now starting up our fourth season . . . When Oprah announced she was launching the Dr. Oz Show it became a big deal in TV since everyone thought it would be a hit.”

As a Post Production Producer Molen oversees a staff of nine editors, three assistant editors, a post coordinator, and three post production assistants to ensure that the field packages are cut and delivered to the studio for taping and that the shows are edited and on their way to TV stations.

He commented that his favorite part of the job is seeing how beneficial Dr. Oz is and has been in peoples’ lives.

“We see every day how we have helped people get control of their health and wellness," he said. "Dr. Oz is also the best host I have ever worked for or with. He is a great person who works hard and cares about people and I feel that comes across on TV and that’s why people like and watch him.”

Molen also noted that his least favorite part of TV production is the amount of work that it requires. “The staff here really works hard every day and puts in lots of hours to put on the best show,” he said.

Dr. Oz is currently filmed at NBC studios in 30 Rockefeller Center, though Molen has also done work for Geraldo, Sally Jesse Raphael, Ricki Lake, Family Feud, To Tell The Truth, Baywatch Hawaii, Judge Hatchet, Judge Maria Lopez, Judge David Young, Judge Karen, and Room Raiders.
