Westfield School District Update 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6

A decision will be made regarding Thursday, November 8, 2012 sessions no later than 8 p.m. Wednesday evening.

 

The Westfield Public Schools will remain CLOSED ON WEDNESDAY, November 7, 2012.

A decision will be made regarding Thursday, November 8, 2012 sessions no later than 8 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Only Elm Street Administrative offices remain without power.  Thanks to the Armory, the Westfield Fire Department and private citizens, we have secured a generator to power up Wilson. 

Jefferson Elementary (600 Boulevard) remains open as a warming center for those without heat. 

Schools remain closed due to safety concerns for those travelling to and from the schools, given the number of power lines that remain down and the number of loose branches hanging over streets and sidewalks.  The Board of Education will request a safety reassessment from Town safety officials later in the day on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, and that feedback will be taken into consideration by Superintendent Dolan, when she determines whether or not to open schools on Thursday, November 8, 2012. 

When the safety evaluation warrants opening the schools, we will open and we are ready.

Board of Education fields remain closed. We have closed schools solely for safety concerns. Therefore, our fields are closed as well.

As we know, there is an additional storm system threatening the area in the next day or two.  We will take that into account, as appropriate, when assessing school openings and closings.

Just driving around Wilson to get past the East Broad blockade one can see a a large number of down lines just one block away from the school in several directions. Unless a large amount of planning takes pland and people are deployed to keep cars and kids away from the those downed lines, I can't imagine anyone sending kids there in the forseeable future - at least through the weekend. It seems like there has not been any progress made around the school in the past week, except to clear out some trees.

At this point, I think plans should be made to startup the schools Monday, even if they have to send the Wilson kids to another school (or even the Temple). Start loading the tables and chairs....

Plans need to be in place to open schools THIS WEEK. There were approximately 20 school age kids in the diner during lunch time today and groups of middle school aged kids walking around town in the snow, without an adult in sight. Westfield parents are clearly quaking in their boots in fear of their kids' safety. They are driving their kids around town, to the movies and to the malls, so surely they can drive them to school (or find them a ride) if there are concerns about walking safely. Working parents are actually expected to be at their jobs this week, so they are having to deal with finding child care, or are leaving kids alone in their homes. Don't see how any of these things are safer than having the kids in school. And will these days have to be made up? If so, when?? Enough is enough. The police chief and school board are kidding themselves if they think parents aren't allowing their kids to leave home for safety reasons.

Electrocuted on way to diner - parents fault. Zapped like a mosquito on way to school, BOE's fault, huge lawsuit. Probably the teachers fault too for taking 3.9% raise.
