Three officers have been promoted to sergeant within the past two years.

The honored three of its sergeants and swore in one new officer Monday morning in the Council Chambers of the .

Police Chief David Wayman and Town Clerk Claire Gray presided over the ceremony recognizing Jason McErlean, Joseph Constanzo, and John Tango, all of whom have been promoted to sergeant within the last two years.

Wayman explained that the process of achieving this designation is both stressful and competitive, exacerbated by the fact that very few positions become available throughout an officer's career.

Eight to 10 weeks of study are required before written and oral exams are administered. Wayman said all this places a good deal of stress on both officers and their families who have sacrificed and supported the officers throughout the process.

"It feels good," said Sgt. John Tango, who added that his accomplishment comes from hard work and the support of his family and Chief Wayman. "I'm proud of being a member of the department and I'm looking forward to the future.

During the second part of the ceremony, police officer Piotr Wierzbicki was sworn in to what Wayman referred to as "the noblest profession."

Wayman said new officers are put though a series of high-pressure interviews which increase in difficulty with each call back.

The chief stated that Westfield only hires "the best of the best" and that Wierzbicki should feel proud because joining the "elite" among law enforcement is an "impressive accomplishment" in itself.

Family and friends filled Council Chambers and posed for photos with the sergeants and new officer after the ceremony.

"Just as they're proud of all they've accomplished, I'm proud of them," Wayman said.

The chief noted that Wierbicki will replace a retired officer so staffing will remain at current levels.
