Why does Union County do passports too? Does the post office already do that?

just searched the state department for places to get you passport in zip 07090. This is what was returned:

UNION COUNTY CLERKS OFFICE
WESTFIELD POST OFFICE
GARWOOD POST OFFICE
CRANFORD POST OFFICE
FANWOOD POST OFFICE
SCOTCH PLAINS POST OFFICE

Let's close the Union County one and save some money

Do you have any idea that it would even save any significant amount of money? Do you know whether it is a requirement that a government office provide this service? Or are you, as usual, just spouting negative comments with no thought process or insight involved?

Yes, it will save money. Someone is getting paid to do that job and is not needed (probably you, or you have a similar job that wastes taxpayer money). And it does not matter how much money it saves. Government should not waste any taxpayer money

There is no designated person that does passports. Any one off the women who work in the office stop what they are doing for the few minutes it takes to take a picture and hand out a form. And no, I don't have that job or any government job for that matter but don't let that little fact get in the way of your complaining, insulting people, or just plain negative outlook on life Sally Sunshine!!

@Sally McBride.

Why stop with the Union County Clerk? How about getting rid of passport services at all 5 of the area post offices? Why stop there?... How about reducing water costs by telling all government employees working in government buildings that toilets can only be flushed at the end of each day with whatever accumulated that day from all employees/visitors? We can cut water usage and save money on water that way.

We all know there is often "fat" that can be trimmed from budgets, but not always. Sometimes, the fat has already been cut and further cutting will be penny-wise and pound-foolish. I'm not saying the passport issue discussed above would be cutting fat or being penny-wise and pound-foolish. I don't know - there were not enough details in this article to conclude- not for me to conclude and not for you to conclude.

The entire "article" on the topic of passports was, literally, ONE SENTENCE! I'll paste it here: "Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi announced that free passport photographs are available from Monday, April 23, 2012 through Saturday, April 28, 2012 when customers apply for a U.S. Passport at her offices in Elizabeth and Westfield"). And yet you drew a pretty strong conclusion. Drawing hasty conclusions like that, without knowing/understanding key facts, is a poor way to think in the first place.

I'm totally with "NJD" on this one.
