Swim Teams Crush Kent Place, Oratory Prep

Boys win 122-49 and girls claim 106-64 victory in preparation for meet with Bridgewater-Raritan

Following numerous first place finishes, the Westfield High School boys and girls swim teams swept Oratory Prep and Kent Place, respectively on Tuesday afternoon at the YMCA. The boys defeated Oratory Prep 122-49, while the girls won their meet handily as well at 106-64.

The boys team displayed its skills and depth in every event, taking first in all but the 100-meter backstroke.

"I'm really proud of how our guys performed," boys head coach Jeffrey Knight said. "A lot of them are coming off of a long weekend, and so the fact that they were able to swim at the level they did really is a testament to how hard they've been working. It was a total team effort."

The Blue Devils started the afternoon off with a first place time of 1:52.8 in the 200 medley relay. Westfield used a swimmer from each grade in this event with senior John Taylor, sophomore Alex Bond, freshman Matt Daniel and junior Sean Clark.

Knight used the meet as an opportunity to give younger team members more time in head-to-head races, and he was pleased with their results.

"It was a good opportunity to see what some of the younger guys can do and they performed well," he said. "It's good to give the guys experience, and it gives us a better base of knowledge going forward from here on out. These guys will really be integral parts of our success come February."

Taylor also won the 100 butterfly at 58.74, while Daniel and Bond finished first as part of the 200 and freestyle relay team. That group finished with a time of 1:40.93.

Senior Yixiao Wang took first place in the 500 freestyle (5:55.31), and as the second leg of the 400 freestyle relay team with Daniel, freshman Nick Constantine and senior Matt Meserole. They won by nearly a minute at 2:47.58. The second place group, also from WHS, finished in 3:50.62.

"We have a lot of depth at multiple positions," Knight said. "It means we can be very versatile when we make up our lineup."

Other first place finishes for the Blue Devils included juniors Nick Boyle and Larry Zhang in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.56) and 200 freestyle (1:54.45), respectively. Sophomores Ryan Hobson (50 freestyle) and Kevin Oster (200 individual medley) also won their events with respective times of 25.76 and 2:23.31.

"(The meet) gave a good portion of the team a chance to come out and show what they can do in each event," senior captain Mike Oster said. "Everyone stepped up to their game. All three lanes did a great job and it shows in our points."

The girls also relied on their depth to defeat Kent Place, getting several second and third place finishes in races to help bump up their point totals.

"I think we did well," girls head coach Brooke Smith said. "We weren't swimming our best times, but we put girls in events that needed to swim them. Kent Place had four or five really fast girls, but as long as we were finishing second, third, fourth or third, fourth, fifth, we figured we'd be ok."

The boys and girls' next meet is on Thursday afternoon against Bridgewater-Raritan High School at the Westfield YMCA.
