Snowed In: How Residents of Westfield Dealt with the Blizzard
How Westfield residents spent their snow day.
After the storm dumped around two feet of snow on Westfield, many residents were thrown off their normal Monday routines due to the vasts amount of snow affecting travel and work.
The snow began to fall mid-morning on Sundayand continued heavily until Moday morning. Travel became perilous as soon as the snow began to stick and only became worse as the snow began to fall more heavily throughout the day. Several "white-outs" resulting from the wind and heavy snowfall made for almost no visibility and almost complete desertion of the roads late Sunday night.
Monday should have been the day that most people returned to work after Christmas vacation, with the exception of Westfield Public Schools and college students, who are still on break. However, the snow was not cleared by morning and making it into work was an impossibility.
Many people chose different ways to spend their snow, many adults who were not able to go into work spent their day working from home. For others it was a day of trying to free their cars from being buried in the snow.
College student Peter Rucinsky said that "I did not envision spending time during my winter-break shoveling snow. My mother had work this morning at 6 a.m. and I had to help her get her car out, it took me almost five hours to finish the entire driveway."
Many others did not even bother to spend time digging their cars out, instead utilizing the day as a time to relax. "I drive an SUV and the snow was up to my door handles, I spent the day getting things done around the house and catching up on some TV shows," said Clarence Street resident Christine Isabella.
Andrew Brill, who resides on North Euclid near Mindowaskin Park joked that "I spent half of my day just waiting for the plow to come by so I could leave my house. I used to throw snowballs at the plows when I was younger, now I depend on them to leave my house."
Needless to say the day was hectic for all of Westfield's inhabitants. This amount of snow does not occur very often and when plows are getting stuck there are bound to be problems.
