Blue skies set the perfect backdrop for tonight's 11th Annual Downtown Westfield 5K & Pizza Extravaganza.
"It's the calm before the storm," joked Downtown Westfield Corporation's executive director Sherry Cronin at 5 p.m. about the short-to-non-existent lines at the check-ins. "It's very organized."
It didn't stay quiet for long as nearly 2,700 runners turned out to take part in the "pizza race." Seven hundred and fifty pizzas fed the hungry masses with 250 supplied by Ferraro's, 250 from Cosimo's and 250 from Casa di Pizza.
Cronin said the DWC was still receiving calls late into last night from runners who wanted to take part in the event.
Taking first place was Chris Croff, 23, of Montclair, who crossed the finish line in 15:29.42. On his heels was Westfield's own Ryan Scrudato, 20, who completed the 5K in 16:11.46. Coming in third was Adam Gruchacz, 23, of Three Bridges. Caroline Williams, 20, of Westfield, was the first woman to finish the race with a time of 18:23.88.

As was stated in previous articles (see http://patch.com/A-wxyt and http://patch.com/A-wql4) proceeds from the race will be used for downtown Westfield streetscape improvements such as new street lights, sidewalks, crosswalks, landscaping and similar projects.

so there is a fund for this, or the people running this just send some money somewhere? Beause on the run's main website, nothing is mentioned about this. Can the patch reach how and find how much was raised and how much was donated to the fund?

because the town is broke and has no money for downtown streetscape improvements such as new street lights, sidewalks, crosswalks, landscaping and similar projects. but lets put in a new turf field and lights at the high school on the backs of the taxpayer. why doesn't the board of education run a fundraiser to raise money for a turf field and lights. i am sure all the teachers would volunteer their time and effort to help?
