Police Blotter: Teens Crash Stolen Car, Attempt to Outrun Police

The following information was obtained from the Westfield Police Department. An arrest does not indication a conviction.

March 17: Jamil T. Simmons, 19, and a 17-year-old male juvenile, both of Newark, were arrested and charged with receiving stolen property and eluding after a brief motor vehicle purusit that ended in the area of First Street and Marion Avenue.

Officers attempted to execute a motor vehicle stop at which time the subjects who were occupying the 2004 Hyundai resisted arrest by increasing their vehicle's speed in an attempt to elude the officers. A brief motor vehicle pursuit ensued and ended when the Hyundai crashed into two parked vehicles in the area of First Avenue and Marion Street. Three subjects fled from the vehicle resulting in a foot chase. Simmons was apprehended shortly after the crash. The 17-year-old juvenile was apprehended approximately an hour after the crash in the area of the South Side train station.

After a further investigation, it was determined that the vehicle the suspects were in was stolen from Roselle. Attempts to locate the third supsect were unsuccessful. The matter is currently under investigation by the Westfield Police Department's Juvenile buearu. Simmons was processed and committed to the Union County jail with bail set at $25,000, no 10% alternative. The 17-year-old juvenile was released to a parent with charges pending.

March 20: Gregory L. Avena, 33, and Nicholas S. Derosa, 25, both of Westfield, were arrested for possession of CDS marijuana under 50 grams following a motor vehicle stop at Boulevard and Park Street. Both were released on their own recognizance with summonses and a pending court date of April 4th.
