Police Blotter: Two DWIs and a Drug Arrest Made

The following information was obtained from the Westfield and Scotch Plains Police Departments. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Feb. 12: Joshua Newberg of Tuxford Road was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). Scotch Plains Police Officer D. Belford stopped Newberg for a motor vehicle violation on East Second St. in Scotch Plains and while speaking with him smelled a strong odor of alcohol. After Newberg failed several field sobriety tests he was placed under arrest. He was transported to headquarters where he was processed and released.

Feb. 15: Olga Leon-Soto, 31, of Clark was arrested for DWI following an accident investigation in the 900 block of W. South Avenue. Leon-Soto was released to a sober adult.

Feb. 18: Residents of the 800 block of Forest Avenue reported a suspicious vehicle and possible narcotics activity in the area. Upon their arrival, officers located the suspect's motor vehicle leaving the scene and observed the driver commit a motor vehicle violation. They conducted a traffic stop in the area of Forest Ave and Seneca Place. A further investigation resulted in the arrest of Aswad Turner, 19, of Plainfield and two juveniles from Westfield and Plainfield for possession of suspected marijuana (under 50 grams) and possession of drug paraphernalia. All three were transported to the Westfield Police Department and processed. The two juveniles were released to their parents and Turner was issued a summons and released.

What's up with that section of town and drug sales, burglaries and car thefts? Looks nice when I drive through. Is it just one guy bringing all of the trash in?

No, unfortunately most of the trash in Westfield lives there. The apartment owners do not do background checks and rent to anyone. It's a shame for the people who live in town and pay high taxes to have to live amongst the druggies and thieves. I read in the Patch last year that a mom who lives there took her daughter to a birthday party and stole wallets. This seems to be the norm over there.

I think since you have such a strong opinion about Forest Ave you should
Come down here in person if you feel so strongly. Who are you to judge? My friend pays almost $2000 a month in rent. A lot of single Moms live there who had to leave their million dollar homes after their divorce.

Are you kidding? Do you really think the kids from town who live in million dollar homes arent involved with drugs? In order to pay rent in this town, you have to have a good job. Average joe doesnt have $1500-$2000 per month to pay for a loft and there is no section 8 here or affordable housing. Get your head out of the sand, and ask any student about the drinking and partying in this town.

The problem is parenting. And yes Tony, a lot of the people in this town are snobs and are that ignorant to think that their children would not be capable of engaging in this type of behavior. Or it's just 'a phase' that all teens go through. I'm sorry, no it does not work like that. The kids of this town and this generation feel they are entitled because their parents make big bucks. The parents let them do whatever the hell they want and then are surprised when their 'used-to-be A student' is now a heroine addict or alcoholic. Wake up people.
