Police and National Guard officials teach Roosevelt students the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
Roosevelt Intermediate School students had some special visitors Tuesday morning to educate them on the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
A group from the New Jersey National Guard landed on the school's back lawn in an Army helicopter to help discuss a lesson in conjunction with the school's DARE program. Arranged by town DARE officer Gary Moore, National Guard officials discussed the dangers of drugs and alcohol while educating the students about their work.
Presentations included the showpiece National Guard helicopter used to assist local police departments statewide, a lesson on what alcohol can do to a person's liver, a demonstration of the county sheriff's K-9 unit and a lesson from the county SWAT team.
The lesson also served as a demonstration of community policing to visiting school and police officials from Albania who are looking to Westfield and New Jersey programs to help develop new community policing initiatives in the eastern European nation.
