Construction is underway at both Westfield High School and Edison Intermediate School as the parking expansion project continues. Trees and grass have been removed to make way for additional parking spots as well as a bus entrance.

Plans were outlined in a public outreach meeting held on April 18, in which recommendations were made by a town-appointed traffic engineer and with subsequent approval by both the Board of Education and the Town Council. The proposal was developed to alleviate traffic and on-street parking issues as well as to promote safety around both schools.

The complete parking plan is posted at www.westfieldnjk12.org under “Important Messages.”

According to the Westfield school district, the schedule for landscaping at Edison and the high school will be determined by the parking lot completion dates at both locations.

“The changes we are making are in response to the public input we have received and to the professional advice of a traffic and safety consultant,” explained Richard Mattessich, Board of Education President. “The Board and Town are working to minimize any disruption to the areas surrounding the schools and have scheduled the projects to take place prior to the start of the new school year.”

At a June meeting of the Westfield Town Council, Councilwoman Joann Neylan, chair of the Public Safety, Transportation and Parking Committee, said the proposed parking changes are proceeding on schedule. She said the work should be completed by the start of the school year in September.

this will only improve parking for teachers who will now park on the east side of rahway ave and not in the armory lot. what about parking on stoneliegh park? why hasn't that been addressed?

I do not see how it can improve "traffic conditions". Expanding parking capacity to meet demand means, if anything, more cars on the same roads heading into the area of the schools.

Westy - There is no room for parking back there...narrow streets. Jeff is spot on. We should not be increasing traffic flow in the area. Especially student parking - most of town is accessible by bike.

Re: "most of town is accessible be bike"

Rusty, by Abe Lincoln's standards ALL of town is accessible on foot. Of course, no taxpayer expense is too great if it is "for the children" - from new parking to lighted turf fields. Who cares about the impact on the residential neighborhoods affected, whether it be a permit to park in front of your own home or clearly reduced property values from the field. Frankly, I think it is long past due for residents to take their town back from an arguably out of control Board of Education, starting with the vote on the bond issue.

No room for parking back there? Are you kidding me? There is room for parking after school hours as evidenced by residents parking "back there".

Nope, not kidding Westy....that road is narrower than streets nearby that allow for parking.
