Man Taken by Helicopter to Hospital After Struck by Deer in Westfield

The accident occurred on Lamberts Mill Road near Bayberry Lane.

A man traveling by motor scooter or motorcycle on Lamberts Mill Road near Bayberry Lane was transported by helicopter to University Hospital in Newark Monday morning after being struck by a deer, Westfield Police Capt. Scott Rodger confirmed.

Rodger said police are at the scene investigating. He could not provide information about the man's condition nor could he confirm the man's identity or say if he is a Westfield resident.

In October, the Department of Environmental Protection issued this warning to motorists: "If you see one deer, be on guard: others may be in the area. Deer typically move in family groups at this time of year and cross roads single-file. Female deer are being chased by bucks and during breeding phase are often unaware of traffic."

Patch will update this story as more information become available.

Hi Walter, Capt. Rodger would not confirm that the victim was deceased. I am following up with Chief Wayman and will update the story as soon as possible.

Pete and Walter you both should be ashamed yourselves from your post, what if this was one of your family members. I witnessed this tragic scene and there is nothing funny about it. The man was Alfred Vastano (56) from South Plainfield. My friend a police office in town had to visit his family to tell them he had passed.
