Letter: Project '79 Thanks Community for Support

A group of 24 students and teachers from Westfield High School left to help with the construction of a school in the Dominican Republic.

We just wanted to say thank you to all the local businesses that helped make our trip to the Dominican Republic possible this year. Since 2007, Project ’79 has been involved with Foundation for Peace (www.foundationforpeace.org) in the construction of a school/community center, water purification system, and clinic in the very poor district of La Javilla de la Cruz Grande, just north of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

As part of our emphasis on service as one way to understand our relationship to the larger world, Project ’79 has run work trips to the D.R. in 2008, 2009, and 2010. We will be completing construction on classrooms on the second floor, as well as painting and other finishing touches. On one of the days, participants will help run a medical clinic for about 500 local families, staffed by doctors and nurses who volunteer their time through the Foundation for Peace. Work trip participants often describe their time in the D.R. as a transformative experience in their understanding of the world.

On Wednesday July 25th, 24 Project ’79 students and teachers began their trip.  Special thanks to Joe Nana at All-Star Limousine for providing transportation to Newark for all. In addition, thanks to all the local businesses to who helped make our silent auction a huge success:
