A gas line was struck on the 100 block of Washington Street in Westfield.

Update 1:50 p.m.

A gas line was struck by a contractor shortly before 11:45 a.m. Tuesday on the 100 block of Washington Street near Baltimore Avenue in Westfield, according to Duane Bourne, a spokesman for Elizabethtown Gas.

Bourne said the utility's first responders were at the scene within 15 minutes and secured the area. There has been no interruption in service. As of 1:45 p.m. crews were working to repair the line, Bourne said.

The Westfield Fire Department was assisting at the scene.

On Friday morning, a gas leak closed North Avenue between East Broad and Prospect Streets for more than an hour as crews investigated elevated levels of what was believed to be methane, or sewer, gas.
