Four Homes Damaged, 25-Percent of Westfield Roads Closed
Fire chief reports damage in Westfield due to Hurricane Irene.
Four homes have been damaged and 25-percent of Westfield's roads are closed due to Hurricane Irene.
Fire Chief Dan Kelly said that four homes had trees or tree limbs fall on them causing structural damage to the home. In addition, downed trees and water in the road have closed a quarter of the town's roads.
Kelly also said power outages have occurred around the community.
"The town has suffered wide spread power outages, this has contributed to residential flooding as sump pumps are unable to operate," Kelly said.
Kelly said the fire department is currently going through a list of pending calls to pump out basements.
Kelly, the town's emergency management coordinator, said residents are encouraged to shelter in their homes due to the danger of downed power lines and trees that could fall.
