Fatal Car Accident at Clifton Avenue and Tice Place Intersection

The victim and driver, a 69 year-old Old Bridge man was apparently not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

An apparent high speed collision caused a fatal accident early Saturday morning at the intersection of Clifton Avenue and Tice Place, Westfield Police said.

According to police, units responded to a 911 call at 1:16 a.m. reporting screams and a possible car crash.

At the scene, officers found two vehicles on the front lawns of two different residences on Tice Place. Both vehicles had been propelled southbound after colliding in the intersection of Clifton Avenue and Tice Place. Air bags deployed in both vehicles.

The victim and driver, a 69 year-old Old Bridge man, Peter Tyliczka, was apparently not wearing a seatbelt and “was ejected from the vehicle,” Lieutenant Edward Maguire said.

He was airlifted by NorthSTAR, the New Jersey State Police Medevac, to University Hospital in Newark.  Despite the efforts of EMS and Trauma Center personnel, the victim was pronounced dead at 5:18 a.m. from injuries sustained in the crash.

Also injured in the crash was the victim's passenger, Kathy Grecco, age 61 of Garwood. Grecco was also transported to University Hospital. She is listed in serious, but stable condition.

According to officer Maguire, Grecco has now awakened but is out of sorts.

The driver of the other vehicle, Robert McGowan, age 25, of Stamford Conn. sustained minor injuries in the crash. McGowan’s passenger, a 26 year-old Westfield man, was also hospitalized with possible broken ribs.

This crash is under investigation by the Westfield Police Traffic Bureau.

“No charges have been filed at this time,” Macguire said.

Your end was tragic and senseless. You fought, for your girls I'm sure, but then succumbed at 5:18am. Your family has gathered. Hearts are broken. Tears are pouring. Parents are suppose to die before their children....but not like this. RIP

High speed? Collision? Cars on front yards? 1AM in the morning? This is a very quiet residential area. What must residents do to prevent 'high speed' issues in a 25MPH area?

Unfortunatley, I do not feel there is much more than we can do. Speeders will speed, and we must pray that they get pulled over before they injure themselves or anyone else.

I must say the WPD are good with traffic enforcement. Had a problem with speeders on my street a few years ago so I talked with the Traffic Bureau; they put a patrol car on my street for the next few weeks until people got the message. Unfortunately, it is not possible for them to catch everyone and tragedies like this happen.
