Democratic Mayoral Candidate David Haas Hits the Campaign Trail

Haas kicks off campaign with Starbucks visit at 12:45 p.m. today.

After announcing last week that he will challenge Westfield Mayor Andy Skibitksy for his seat this November, Third Ward Councilman David Haas kicks off his campaign today with a "listening tour."

“Westfield is a great town, but it can be better. I want to start my campaign by listening to residents and hearing their concerns,” said Haas in a statement emailed to Patch.

Haas' stops are as follows:

12:45 p.m.  Starbucks, Central Ave., followed by a walk through of downtown Westfield.

2:30 p.m.  Sunrise Assisted Living Center, 240 Springfield Ave., meet with seniors, including Felix Haas, Dave’s father.

3:30 p.m.  Meeting with Young Democrats, Haas home, Shackamaxon Drive.

First elected in 2005 and reelected in 2009, Haas is the council's lone Democrat and a former member of both the Board of Adjustment and the Planning Board. In recent months, Haas, a father of two, has urged Skibitsky to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Skibitsky announced in February that he will buck tradition and seek a third term.

Hi Westfielder, did you miss our coverage of Mayor Skibitsky's visit to Bagel Chateau announced here http://patch.com/A-2Vgr and here http://patch.com/A-2Vgr ? Patch welcomes Mayor Skibitsky to continue to send us announcements regarding his campaign as Mr. Haas did in this case.

Are you kidding?! Celock wrote some of the most biassed pieces ever! Don't get me wrong, he is a great writer, and brought a lot of great information. Hpwever, he approached the position of editor the same way he approached being the Cranford (or was it Scotch Plains?) High School's Young Republicans President. He was rarely ever bipartisan.

A question to be asked is whether he'll follow national democrats lockstep like other local democrats from red states/districts on issues that do affect us; taxes, budget, 2nd Amendment, etc. How is he viewed by fellow councilmen? What is his relationship with the County and State? Claiming to represent all, but invites young democrats to his home to kick start his campaign run? Many questions to be answered and to vet him.

No different than Skibitsky using Young Republicans during his past campaigns. Mr. Haas has a very good reputation with Union County Freholders (all Democrats) where a large chunk of our municipal tax dollars go.

This is definitely something we should be weary of. The Union County Freeholders are no friend of the Town of Westfield. The exception of a few, they are a bunch of political hacks who represent the Democrat towns in the county, never the suburban Republican ones like Westfield, Cranford, Summit, or New Providence.

David Haas is a good person and has been a thoughtful and strong councilman. He has my support.

He is my Ward 3 Councilman and he's great . . Hiow is he viewed by other councilmen ? More important -- how is he viewed by the residents and how is Skibitsky viewed by the residents .
He's not running for Mayor of the Councilmen . He's running for Mayor of the residents . That's a ridiculous statement
