Councilman David Haas to Run for Mayor of Westfield
Third Ward Democratic councilman will challenge Mayor Andy Skibitsky.
Third Ward Councilman David Haas has announced he will challenge Westfield Mayor Andy Skibitksy for his seat this November.
First elected in 2005 and reelected in 2009, Haas is the council's lone Democrat and a former member of both the Board of Adjustment and the Planning Board.
According to The Westfield Leader, Haas stated: "I am running to help make Westfield an even better place to live than it is. We are all proud that Westfield has excellent schools, a vibrant downtown, beautiful parks, and caring, intelligent and skilled neighbors. But like other very successful communities, Westfield needs a town government dedicated to promoting openness, transparency and the active involvement of every member of our community, regardless of political party or affiliation, in meeting the new and sometimes unexpected challenges we will face in the years ahead."
In recent months, Haas, a father of two, has urged Skibitsky to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
In February, Skibitsky announced he will buck tradition and seek a third term.
The Town Council will meet next at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 19 at the Municipal Building.

Great !!! Congratulations . David is intelligent , classy and cares . Three words I'd never be able to use to describe Mayor Skibitsky . The mayor is rude to residents , dismisses them and is extremely immature . He's like a fifth grade bully --
It is very unprofessional and doesn't reflect the intelligence of our town . And he never shows up for Town Council meetings either
So why does he want to run again ?
To build up his name for something else .
We need a CHANGE -- DAVID HAAS FOR MAYOR !!!

Karen Egert is a prime reflection of the intelligence of our town! Since her singing career tanked, a useless campaign in a district where gun violence is not an issue is all she has got left to keep herself occupied and in the spotlight.
Karen, please stop attacking those who are true public servants and do not have hidden agendas like you do. It is unflattering to say the least.

Ever since the town moved the election for mayor to a non presidential election year, the Republicans have dominated due to decreased voter turnout. After voting for Andy twice I see no reason to vote again for him due to his bucking party tradition and seeking a third term. Westfield needs new leadership. I will be following the campaign of Haas and if I like what I see an hear he will have my vote. Otherwise I will cast a write in honorary vote for Budd Boothe or Richard Bagger.

Mr.M --So working towards reducing gun violence in this country is a useless campaign ? And was the North's campaign for ending slavery a useless campaign as well because there was no slavey in the North?
Is your definition of what has value for the common good and for our society only what is wrapped up in your own little microcosim? That seems quite limited , self involved and lacks the broad perspective of what it means to be a contributing member of society. As an American., I'm working on what we can do better -- and it starts right here at home . In case you haven't noticed. , Westfield doesn't have a fence around it and is part of the country at large . Hmmm.... Mr. M-- are you that short sighted and narrow minded? 1) Best of luck Dave.....It's time for a change and a Mayor that has the guts to stand up for better gun laws and safer schools. Not signing Bloombergs petition was a mistake- It's a shame the entire town could not vote on that decision- but I guess that is what election day will be all about.
2) Attacking Karen Egert on this board is such an NRA ploy- come on guys- you really have to stoop to this kind of behavior? The woman is taking on a very tough and controversial topic and has the guts to take this leadership. I applaud her hard work and concern for the safety of our children- This is not about the 2nd Ammt. -its just common sense that I believe Thomas Paine would have even supported..

Its time for Mayor Skibitsky to go. And the fact that he refuses to support Mayor Bloomberg's initiative is partisan politics as usual. Let us remind the haters that Its Mayors Against ILLEGAL guns. ILLEGAL GUNS! And yes this issue is important to every family in Westfield. We have had enough! I applaud David Haas for having the courage to support this initiative. We will have a sensible, pragmatic and thoughtful new mayor representing the sentiments of our residents soon.

Ah, the Bloomberg, Mr. You're Too Stupid to Decide Things For Yourself, Petition is a joke. I find it funny that Dave Haas never actually cites a statistic in his rant about why this petition is even relevant or needed. Here is what Haas, Mitch, Karen and rest of the anti-gun people are forgetting or actually deliberately omitting from this entire conversation - what happened in CT is absolutely a tragedy, but it should not be used as a springboard to say we need to ban guns or even certain types of guns and high capacity magazines. You want to blame or demonize something that you can control. The reality is that what you really want to ban is violence in our country which, unfortunately, has NOTHING to do with guns. It's in our nature to be violent. See, people like Haas, Mitch and Karen think that taking away your guns will somehow stop gun violence. It won't. It actually encourages people who are prone to be violent to be more violent. But let's put that argument aside for a second and talk about "assault rifles" - the demonizing name for a semi-automatic rifle. According to FBI stats, In 2011 the total murders from firearms were a little over 8,500. Total rifle deaths (not just semi-automatic rifles) was just a little over 300 or about 3% of ALL murders. Compare that with people killed by hands and feet (twice as many as rifles) and knives (5 times as many as rifles). .....
UnionAtty
9:28 am on Monday, March 18, 2013
People killed by medical errors in country totaled about 98,000 deaths (about 12 times the amount of people killed by firearms and nearly 300 times the amount of people killed by all rifles). But you don't see anyone talking about banning knives, hands, feet or doctors because people like Dave and Mitch paint with a broad brush and say, knives good, guns bad. Statistically, guns have prevented somewhere between 800,000 and 2 million crimes every year. The Second Amendment is not there to protect us against criminals. It is there to protect us against tyranny and politicians (the same ones who ask for armed security wherever they go or who carry guns themselves). The focus needs to be changed from gun control to crime control. You want gun control, go and enact the 28th Amendment taking away the rights afforded by the Second Amendment and affirmed over and over again by the US Supreme Court. Seriously, if this is the best issue that all of you can come up with for change in Westfield, you have some serious priority issues. My vote is for Andy.

Mitch, Mitch, Mitch.. you just seem to make poor decisions over and over again. And, no, I do not belong to the NRA. I stay informed, read and do my own investigation before mouthing off. Let me tell you, as a member of the BoE, it's "Bloomberg's"- possessive. Second, telling me we should do something because other towns did it is a ridiculous argument. Who cares that they signed it? Do you even know why they signed it? Probably not. And, if changing the focus is citing facts and statistics rather than relying on the mantra "guns bad" is somehow changing the focus, I suggest you come up with something better to show me how my lens is out of focus. This is why you failed to win over the town on the issue of jamming turf fields with roof repairs. As for the tyranny comment, tyranny is anything where your government tries to control you under the guise that they somehow know better than you - like telling you how much soda you can purchase (Bloomberg), or how much salt you can put on your fries (Bloomberg), or what toilet bowl or light bulb you need to purchase for your home. That is not America. As a politician (yes, you're a politician) we tell you what to do, not the other way around.

That point made whatever you had to say afterwards petty. Which is a shame because the concerns you raise are valid.
I wonder if you'd be more civilized using your actual name as Mitch does. It would probably make for a more legitimate discussion of a serious issue. Let me be clear to all of the people out there that fear "losing their guns". Bloomberg's initiative does not state" everyone give back your weapons". It encourages the passage of the Fix Guns Checks Act which emphasizes universal and comprehensive background checks for all gun purchases. Even 80% of NRA members support universal background checks. Your arguments can never hold up. It is easier to buy a gun than a sudafed in most states which is a disgrace! Stop hiding behind the second amendment. This is not about that!

"Holy hell Karen! How should anyone take you or your "movement" seriously if you don't even know the proper SPELLING of the weapons you seek to ban? It is spelled UZI! U-Z-I...unless you read the story wrong and the guy was caught DWI drunk on ouzo? Seriously, find an issue that you even have the remotest clue in what you are talking about. You make yourself look foolish.
And don't say "spelling doesn't matter, the weapons are still dangerous...how many CHILDREN must we--blah blah blah." It goes to credibility. There is no way that you should be offering yourself up as leader of a movement to ban something that you clearly are so unfamiliar with that you cannot even get the spelling right. Your phonetic attempt at "ooozie" means that you have never even seen the word in print before, which means you have done zero research of even the most basic nature.
Therefore you are nothing but an emotional basket-case with no knowledge of your subject, with nothing but self-righteous baloney as your position, and no business even being involved in a movement that seeks to restrict the rights of law-abiding Americans. It doesn't matter. Reid just took Dianne Feinstein's assault weapons ban out of the Dems; gun legislation. And she could even spell UZI."

(SInce it's obvious you have no knowledge of anything related to guns I'll give you a lesson). I don't know the ins and outs of the law, but if it was an UZI submachine gun, then the very fiact that it's an automatic would mean it's already banned! And yet...they guy still had one. Wow. Shocking! But there is a law! Hey, that's not fair! A law was passed. And a mayors' resolution too. And yet he still had an UZI?? What gives? Maybe if he read the Mayor's petition against illegal guns, he might have seen the error of his ways. What do you think? See, In your world there are two types of people: Good, moral, righteous people who agree with you that a law passed is behavior achieved, and people (even parents) who want dead kids who agree with the founding fathers, common sense, civil liberties, and aren't naive enough to think that passing a law will change the way the fatherless gang bangers and drug pushers and psychopaths deal with guns. But it makes the Karens of the world feel good about themselves. And isn't that really what it's all about? Feeling morally superior to someone else. Marci. First of all. Have I ever attacked Slater? I might have asked him to expand on a gun control statement he made once or twice but that's not 'attacking' -- at least not in the non-pc touchy feely world of the non far-left. Westfield isn't even my town so why would I care about what a school board guy there does?
See Marci. When you are actively trying to change laws that will affect the rights of all citizens, including the millions who currently both own firearms as is their right AND (I know this may shock you) live peaceful lawful lives as the founding fathers intended, then you better damn well at least know what you're talking about. When you make such a basic error like that not once but twice (meaning you really do think it's spelled "oozie") then you show you've never even done any research at all on the very thing you're trying to ban. That is not an "attack". That is questioning someone's competence to speak on the subject. Karen is getting under my skin the way all fools do. I'm glad you're happy about that. Aman77, this argument again has never been about taking your weapons AWAY! It is so exhausting to fight with mouthpieces of the NRA who by the way can care less about you Aman77, they only care about how much they can double the cost of the AR-15! They only care about money and all of you people think they care about your rights. Well they don't. You are foolish to believe anything else. I am one of the organizers with Karen NJRA and although her spelling is not one of her strengths, she is dedicated and is at least trying to do something about this issue.
We are fluid in this subject but still have a lot to learn. Truth be told, what happened at that Elementary School can happen anywhere even in pristine Westfield. Our society resolves conflict with fighting. Put an automatic weapon in peoples hand, it becomes a mass murder. Aman77, I am sure you can understand where our passion comes from. Those children were scraped off of the floor with shovels. Shovels! We don't stand a chance against assault weapons and assault ammunition. This is not about gun rights and you know that. Its about setting limits on the types of guns that should be allowed in a civil society.

And then tell me that you honestly believe that any law passed will in any way prevent gang bangers, thugs, hoods, drug dealers, and psychos (the ones who do most of the gun killings) from getting their hands on an "oozie" or whatever. How come it didn't set any limits on the guy who had the Ooozie already? Because just because you pass a law, or sign a petition, doesn't mean people change.

(See how annoying that is when people don't give you credit for having your own belief systems?).
Here's how uninformed you sound: You say: "Put an automatic weapon in people's hands--" STOP! right there. An AR-15 is NOT an automatic weapon. An automatic weapon like one of your compadre's "ooozies" is. And that, my dear activist wannabe, is why they are ILLEGAL already and no one argues with that.
Oh and Marci, please tell me why I never heard of your organization before it was little WHITE suburban children who were killed -- by a psychopath by the way. Just like McVae (with a bomb). But gee Marci. every day for years and year little black and brown kids were dying and there was no outrage there. Let me ask you a question. If in 300 days 1 black child dies every day from a gun, and then once every what? 3000days 20 white kids are killed (but all at once) who is more dead? And I love the "hateful" fallback all you limosine liberals fall back on when you're exposed for the hypocrites you are. Face it.
