Council Briefed on Stop Light, Addams and Cerchio

Central Avenue light main discussion at Council meeting.

Tuesday evening's Town Council meeting featured a series of briefing on projects around the community.

Town Engineer Kris McAloon briefed Council members on the new traffic lights for Central Avenue. He said the signage, striping and poles have been instaled nad he is waiting for the county to put in the new lights signals. McAloon said the county engineer changed it from the traditional signals to the HAWK (High Intensity Activated Crosswalk) System, which has two red lights and a yellow. The lights remain dark until a pedestrian is in the crosswalk, when it flashes to alert drivers to stop for the pedestrian.

Councilman Mark Ciarrocca, the former public safety committee chairman, said the two had proposed the issue several years ago as part of the idea to have the new light on Central be a pedestrian activated light only. Councilwoman Vicki Kimmins expressed some concern on the system, saying that if the light was not routinely lit, drivers would speed down Central and miss the warning. McAloon explained to Kimmins that studies have shown the opposite with the HAWK system in place.

Moving to economic development policy, the Council granted approval to a proposal from the Downtown Westfield Corporation that the ADDAMS letters honoring Westfield native cartoonist Charles Addams can be placed in front of the train station for two weeks in the fall. The display is part of teh DWC's decision to showcase Addams during the course of the year.

The Council was also briefed that next week's Council meeting will include a ceremony honoring firefighter Lou Cerchio. Cerchio saved a mother and son from drowning off the coast of Point Pleasant while off duty in September. Council members learned the ceremony would have been held earlier but Cerchio wanted to wait until his parents would be able to attend.
