College Men's Club Spends Friday Night at the Fights
Annual fundraiser raises scholarship money for WHS men.
The boxers circled the ring, sizing each other up, waiting to make their move. One moved in for the punch, with a right jab, his opponent easily ducking away. Coming back, a left jab, then a one-two combo, before quickly ducking from jabs coming from his opponent, while the crowd responded with cheers or jeers to their favored competitor.
The room was packed, surrounding the ring with hundreds of spectators watching the fights. The event was not a professional match, but rather an evening of Westfielders raising money for a local charity.
The annual Friday Night at the Fights fundraiser for the College Men's Club of Westfield brought in several hundred local residents to enjoy a night of boxing. The fundraiser brought in thousands for the scholarship group, with over $7,000 raised through the efforts of the event's round card girls in selling 50/50 raffle tickets during the evening.
The seven bouts featured various levels of amateur boxers competing in tournaments as part of the New Jersey Boxing Association. Most of the matches were quarter final bouts for the tournaments, with one championship round scheduled, sending the winner to compete for New Jersey in the national amateur boxing tournament.
The College Men's Club of Westfield was founded in 1922 to provide scholarship opportunities for men at Westfield High School. The group awards roughly $25,000 annually to graduating male students at WHS, with the scholarships determined based on financial need. The boxing event, held the Friday night before the Super Bowl is one of the group's main fundraisers.
