Bovella's Stars in ABC's 'What Would You Do?' Tonight
ABC's hidden camera show filmed an episode at the pastry shop in December and it will air tonight at 9 p.m.
What would you do if you walked into Bovella's Pastry Shoppe and encountered a desperate young mother whose infant, left alone in an upstairs apartment, could be heard crying through a baby monitor? Would you try to help her or grab your coffee and go?
ABC's hidden camera show 'What Would You Do?' will reveal just how Westfield residents and Bovella's customers reacted when it airs the episode filmed at the bakery at 9 p.m. tonight.
Ralph Bencivenga, Bovella's owner, said a crew scouted out Westfield locales in search of one that would be ideal for staging an ethical dilemma one month prior to filming in December.
"They loved the location," he said of his East Broad Street pastry emporium.
Bencivenga said the scenario involved an actress pretending to be an overwhelmed young mother who claims to live in the apartment above the shop. Standing in the bakery holding a baby monitor through which customers could hear a crying infant, the would-be mom told patrons she was a bad mother and didn't know what to do.
Utterly distraught, the actress tells customers she has resorted to using the baby monitor as a sitter because she has no one else to help her.
"People really felt bad for her," said Bencivenga. "It really touched them. Mothers were trying to help her, to coach her. Some offered to take the baby for her. Others called 911."
The show, known for putting people on the spot, is hosted by John Quinones, who eventually steps in to let people know the whole scene has been fabricated.
Bencivenga said once it was revealed that the situation was a hoax, some people to started to cry.
"It was very emotional," he said. "It was really nice to see people come to help someone, to come to their aid."
The business owner said he "can't wait" to see the show this evening.
"We had a good turnout," he said. "It was a fun day."
