Arrests Made in Train Station Bike Thefts

Two Plainfield residents accused of trading bikes for drugs.

Two Plainfield residents have been arrested in a spree of bike thefts from the South Avenue train station parking lot.

Police Captain David Wayman said the two individuals were arrested after being spotted stealing the bikes from the train station. He said the two individuals, a man and a woman, have been identified as drug addicts who were stealing the bikes and then trading them for drugs in Plainfield.

The names of those arrested were not immediately available.

Wayman said that while bike thefts at the train station have been on the rise in the summer, it is not a cause of concern as the crime typically sees a rise in the summer months. He said the nice weather causes more commuters to choose to bike to the train station instead of being driven.

He said the train station remains an easy target for bike thefts.

“The train station is an ideal spot because commuters leave their bikes for an extended period of time,” Wayman said.

All of the bikes stolen this month from the train station had been chained to the bike racks at the station.

Wayman said that while Westfield’s parking agents do patrol the lot regularly looking to give out parking tickets, it is tough for them to catch those stealing bikes.

“Parking enforcement is looking or it and driving through in marked units and they stick out,” he said. “If someone is going to steal they will wait until the parking enforcement is gone.”

I can`t wait for the winter time. It seems like the summer brings out all the creeps. A graffiti article one day and now this article about bikes being stolen. Since the town is short handed with budget cuts, I hope these criminals are being punished by cleaning the parks and pickiing up garbage around town for a couple of weeks. By the way what is the punishment for these creeps and the misguided graffiti youth ?

Are there no video cameras covering the bike parking lots, with this amount of theft activity? Seems like cameras, together with signage that the areas are under surveillance, may help deter theft.
