From March 15 -31 Curves of Westfield is conducting a food drive to fill the food pantry in our community. Potential members can donate a bag of groceries, try our facility for a week and have their enrollment fee waived. You will be helping our community as well as yourself.

Exclusive Salon Offers Free Hair Care Classes

VP Salon in Westfield is launching their hair master class series for women with a free class focusing on Blow Dry Basic Techniques on Tue, April 6^th from 6:30-8:30 pm. Open to the public, the class will be a one on one with an education on basic techniques.

VP Salon owner and lead stylist Victor Passucci will speak about how to properly blow dry hair and participants will work individually with team members to get their concerns and needs addressed. Participants will have their hair washed and dried as they learn how to blow dry it for maximum results.

Over-50 Adults: Register for Free Mar. 30 Fitness Demo and Lecture

Union County adults who are 50 or older are invited to take advantage of a free class, "Physical Activity for Mature Adults," from the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Union County. The class, led by health expert Dr. Karen Ensle, will show aging adults how to stay limber and active with four basic types of exercise, and will explain how these exercises are beneficial. Attendees will also receive a free copy of the book, "Your Everyday Guide to Exercise and Physical Activity," from the National Institute on Aging, a $24.95 value.

The class will be held on Mar. 30 from 7pm-9pm in the County building at 300 North Avenue East in Westfield. Pre-registration is required to attend. Contact Digna Torres at the Extension offices, 908-654-9854 or dtorres@ucnj.org.

Ryan Fleming and Austin Wenta are Honored on Achieving Eagle Rank

Ryan Fleming and Austin Wenta were both honored on March 8, 2010 for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout rank is the highest rank available in Boy Scouting. Ryan and Austin are both members of Westfield's Troop 72 which is sponsored by the Questers Bible Study Group of The Presbyterian Church. Among those making presentations honoring the two new Eagle Scouts were Assemblywomen Nancy Munoz and Assemblyman Jon Bramnick.

To achieve the Eagle Rank both Ryan and Austin had to follow a rigorous path over several years, earning more than 21 merit badges and planning and providing leadership for a substantive community service project.

For his Eagle Project, Ryan led a group of scout and adults repairing and painting the walls in the training room of the Westfield Rescue Squad. Also as part of his project he led his group in researching the names of past members of the squad to add their names to expanded past member boards. Finally he constructed a bookcase for the training room.

Ryan is a sophomore at Westfield High School. He has traveled with his class to the Dominican Republic to help build a local school and water treatment plant. He is working during this school year to raise money to return to work again on this project next summer. He currently serves as Troop 72's Senior Patrol Leader.

Austin's Eagle Project was the restoration of the Frazee cooking building at the Miller Cory House Museum. He led a group of scouts and adults staining the building, building a new door, cleaning out the attic and fixing cracked boards on the building. In addition, his group did extensive gardening including building a rock wall and securing the front sign for the museum.

Austin is a senior at Westfield High School and is currently deciding on a college to attend next year. His interests are varied ranging from music as a member of the school band to sports as a member of the wrestling team. He has held many leadership positions in the troop and is currently serving as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.

Gaston Award Presented

Linnea Rhodes, right, receives the Kenneth Gaston Award from committee chairman Eleanor Senus. The award is given annually by The Friends of Westfield Memorial Library to a person/persons who have furthered the activiites of the library. Rhodes, a copresident of The Friends, was instrumental in establishing the popular Museum Pass Program at the library.

Laurie Kathleen Meyers of Westfield, and Rochester, NY, died on Feb. 20 after a struggle with breast cancer. Memorial donations may be made to Defenders of Wildlife National Headquarters, 1130 17th St. NW, Washington, DC 20036, or www.defenders.org.

Local Physicians Donate Surgical Equipment to Haiti

Three Westfield physicians assisted the Union County Medical Reserve Corps (UCMRC) in sending aid to Haiti in the wake of the Jan.12 earthquake there. Dr. Ralph Sweeney, Dr. Peter Mlynarszyk and Dr. David Befeler donated suturing supplies to the relief effort. Food, clothing and other medical supplies were also collected.

UCMRC is a group of trained volunteers who help the county's public health professionals during times of emergency.
